Operation Candy Cane Checkstop
Staff from Alberta Health Services EMS and Health Promotion departments team up with local schools, fire, police and enforcement services to operate Operation Candycane Checkstop in communities across the Peace Country to provide safety tips to practice during the holiday season.
Holiday Safety Tips
Vehicle Safety
The few seconds it takes to buckle your seat-belt may be the best present you can give your family and friends.
- Always wear your seatbelt correctly.
- Young children (12 and under) should ride in the rear seat.
- Make sure child safety seats are size– and age-appropriate, properly installed and used whenever children are riding in the vehicle.
- Ensure packages and parcels are secured in vehicle and not able to move in compartment.
Drink Responsibly
With a little care, you can prevent unnecessary tragedy.
- If you drink, DON’T DRIVE.
- If you are going to drink, plan ahead – have a designated driver or plan to use a taxi.
- If you are hosting a party, don’t let your guests drink and drive: make sure they have a way to get home safely.
Slip and Fall Hazards
Falls are one of the most frequent types of calls Emergency Medical Services attends during the holiday season.
- Keep walkways and steps free of ice and snow.
- Look for loose rugs and other tripping hazards in your house.
- Use a spotter and always follow directions for ladder use.
Fire Safety Tips
- Don’t leave candles unattended or too close to combustibles.
- Don’t place combustible materials too close to electrical heaters, fireplaces, or other heating equipment.
- Watch out for electrical cords that are frayed or have exposed wires.
Snowmobile safety
- Always wear a helmet and proper winter clothing and safety gear.
- Never consume alcohol or drugs before or during snowmobiling.
- Operate at safe and reasonable speeds.
- Stay on trails and areas where snowmobiling is permitted.
- Avoid travel on unfamiliar frozen bodies of water.
- Use extra caution at night.
- Become familiar with the terrain you will travel on.
- Never ride alone, and let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return.
- Carry emergency supplies and learn survival skills.
